Superyacht Reflections

From 28 September to 1 October 2016, the 26th Monaco Yacht Show will celebrate the best that Superyachts have on offer with 34,000 participants from around the world.

Private yacht owners, future buyers of yachts and decision-makers from leading companies in the yachting and luxury sectors will discover 125 of the most desirable yachts from the past year, the latest trends in naval architecture and the technological gadgets or nautical leisure accessories of tomorrow.

The MYS delivers a spectacular exhibition that is renewed every year that reflects the constant changes in an industry driven by the desires – and the purchasing power – of its wealthy clientele.

Three years ago, the show reoriented its development strategy in order to meet and even anticipate the needs of its participants – private clients, high-level visitors, managers of large brokerage or shipyard companies and all the sectors directly linked to yachting or complementary to this great luxury industry. The Monaco Show is considered to be an important indicator of the health of the sector but to its visitor’s it must also reflect an emotional experience. The declared aim of the Show’s organisers is to make MYS a genuine label. This unifying ambition translates into the development of daring and innovative solutions to promote the market to a world-wide audience, the high point of which naturally remains the still unrivalled end of September MYS event.

High-level guests at the MYS
For the last three years MYS has participated in Monaco Week in China, in collaboration with the Monegasque Embassy in China and the show’s historic Asian media partner, Bluinc Media group. This press and public relations operation took place in Chengdu, the economic and financial capital of western China with 20,000 high net worth individuals in its population. This operation involved two phases, in China and then in Monaco, where a delegation of Chinese VIPs were welcomed to the Show in September. While China remains a region with enormous potential to develop yachting, it still represents a challenge for players in this market, whose determination has been clearly displayed in the promotional activities that have been undertaken in recent years.

On 27 September 2016, 400 top guests will be invited to the show’s opening gala evening. This will also be the 3rd edition of the MYS Superyacht Awards and trophies will be presented to some of the superyachts exhibited at the MYS. A few hours before that, the MYS organisers will have held a new edition of the Monaco Yacht Summit, this time in a new version for an exclusive VIP audience limited to about fifty invited guests.

Enjoy the MYS experience … and come back every year.
In response to the express desire of the finest automobile manufacturers to participate in the MYS in recent years, a totally new exhibition space, the Car Deck, dedicated solely to ultra-high-quality vehicles will be launched. Several prestige automobiles with be on display to the Show’s clientele and available for purchase or a test drive in the heart of the town. The Car Deck will thus supplement the exhibition space set aside exclusively for luxury sectors linked to yachting.

Created as a confidential service for exhibitors in 2014, the Sapphire Experience offers a bespoke visit to the MYS exclusively for private clients interested in chartering or purchasing a superyacht (Only 100 Sapphire Experiences are on offer).
Particular attention has been given to improving transport facilities so as to ensure regular trouble-free transit between the different exhibition areas that now cover the whole of Port Hercules: the network of launches will offer direct routes between the various quays, including a special line for the crossing between the Quai de l’Hirondelle and the Quai Antoine 1er. On land the golf cart service introduced in 2015 will offer new stops and extended service hours to back up the networks of bus shuttles and courtesy cars that will continue to connect hotels in Monaco directly with the show. Three helicopter lines will provide services between Monaco and Nice airport or the Cannes and Saint-Tropez business terminals. The new MYS application, to be launched at the end of August, will additionally facilitate access to transport solutions and suggest the best route to the exhibition booth or yacht that interests you.
The 2016 edition of the Monaco Yacht Show will occupy an exhibition area totaling 20,000 sq. m., once again presenting 580 exhibiting companies and MYS partners, 125 superyachts including some forty new vessels making their world premiere and a selection of luxury tenders and other accessories for water sports and leisure activities.

Fully Wooden Boat by Famous Architect Frank Gehry

Frank Gehry recently teamed up with naval architect Germán Frers to design a luxurious wooden boat. Although Gehry is a world-renowned architect, he has also demonstrated a knack for boat design. His latest work demonstrates that his creations are suitable for land and the sea.

Gehry and Frers’ creation is a fully wooden boat named ‘Foggy.’ The luxurious yacht is a two-sail vessel that boasts Gehry’s signature wavy designs. The boat features a series of glass lattices that allow light to flood the living and sleeping quarters. On the deck, curved seats are integrated into the stern to provide a comfortable viewing area. The boat was made using a technique that involves sandwiching the wood around a high-tech core. This means that the wooden vessel is not only beautiful, but it is also more durable than traditional planking.

The wooden yacht demonstrates that Gehry’s talents are not limited to architectural design.

Agantur Shipyard delivers 38m steel Dhow-style superyacht Tornado!

Agantur Shipyard in Turkey has delivered the 38 metre steel Dhow-style superyacht Tornado to the UAE.

The superyacht, built at the yard’s Bodrum site, carries exterior lines reminiscent of the traditional Dhow, while down below there is a modern interior. With a full-beam master suite and four guest cabins, Tornado is decorated with hand-made crystals and gold-plated accessories, silk carpets, Sapelle wood and ultra-leather. Guests will also appreciate the comfort provided by TRAC 440-20X zero-speed stabilisers.

The yacht is fitted with twin 1400hp CAT engines that will give her a top speed of 16 knots. Cruising speed will be around 14 knots and the yard says she is compliant with RINA notation for Unrestricted Navigation. Within her beam of nine metres, Tornado has capacity to carry 10 crew.

The Agantur yard says Tornado is the sister yacht to the 31.7 meter Dhow motor yacht AD5, which was launched in 2012 and also built by Agantur Shipyard, part of the Özkalay Group.

The superyacht is the latest in Agantur’s line of custom and semi-custom builds, now numbering more than 30, utilising in-house design and engineering services. The yard also offers consultancy, maintenance and brokerage services. Agantur currently has a 14.9 metre motor trawler in build and a number of new projects, including a 30 metre ketch and a 47 metre three-masted sailing superyacht.

Qatar International Boat Show 2015

Doha 2 November 2015 – If you thought that the Qatar International Boat Show was simply about exhibitors showing off their latest and best boats to potential buyers, then think again. QIBS 2015 – which will be held from the 10th to 14th November in Mourjan Marinas, Lusail City, just north of Doha, is simply bursting with activities that will surely appeal to all members of the family, young or old.

The special VIP opening day – Tuesday the 10th – will begin at 4 pm with H.E. the Minister of Economy and Trade, Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Thani inaugurating the show for the second year running. From 6:30pm onwards the Qatar Coast Guards will stage a parade of boats. The Coast guards will also have a Boat Sailing Simulator on display in the main exhibitor area.

On the first day of QIBS 2015 there will also be a parade of ten boats given by the Qatar Sailing and Marine Sports Federation that was the result of a merger, earlier this year, of the Qatar Marine Sports Federation and Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation, bringing the activities of those organizations under one roof. The main aim of the Federation is to ensure implementation of the Olympic Charter and promotion of Sailing, Rowing, Canoe-Kayak & Kite boarding in the State of Qatar. They will be providing the Show with exciting activities and displays such as kids’ sailing and jet skiing.

If you’re into water sports, you certainly won’t want to miss out on the demonstration of wakeboarding, which will be given by Khalid Al Awadhi – a professional member of the Kuwaiti Wakeboard Team. Wakeboarding is a surface water sport which was developed from a combination of water skiing, snowboarding, and surfing techniques. Wakeboarding has been a recognized part of the Olympic Games for the past ten years, and there are over 400 days of wakeboarding, wake skating and wake surfing events each year.

Also present at QIBS 2015 will be a contingent from Blue Marine – an organization which offers activities such as jet skiing and fly boarding. Blue Marine is one of the leading marine companies in Qatar offering a full line up of water sports activities, and it’s located at Mourjan Marinas – Lusail City, which of course is where QIBS is

being held. Blue Marine will provide side activities such as canoeing, fly boarding, Jet Ski racing, kite surfing, scuba diving, and wakeboarding.

Blue Pearl Water sport Tourism will also be present. It specializes in sea, wind and human powered water-sports leisure. They are not just wind surfing, kite surfing and kayaking aficionados, but they are also masters of stand up paddle boarding – known as SUP. Blue Pearl says that their mission is to make SUP the fastest growing water-sport accessible to all age groups and skill levels in Qatar and through the region.

Something being shown for the first time in Doha is the Gais Spear gun. This is produced by a Qatari start-up company, which is producing these guns for fishing and will be highlighted on the ‘Made in Qatar” stand.

Quite apart from water sports, the parade of Harley Davidson motorbikes will return to the Show for the third year running, by popular demand. Last year saw over 50 Harleys at QIBS. See how many you can count this time around.

Of course, QIBS also boasts a family-friendly environment. There is even a Pirates and Mermaids kids’ zone where there will be a playground area, as well as engaging activities such as drawing, painting, storytelling related to boating, the sea, sailing, and so on, as well as a dedicated F&B area.

Speaking of F&B, QIBS 2015 will be offering visitors scrumptious meals prepared by tents managed by five-star hotels. Cuisines on offer include Lebanese, Japanese (Sushi), and Italian, and visitors will also be treated to a generous salad bar and high – end Italian coffee.

But it’s not just the visitors who are catered for. As a special thank you to all the exhibitors who have come to Qatar from all points of the globe, there will be an exhibitors’ party in the prestigious Ritz Carlton Hotel where professionals can reunite or make new contacts with their peers. Meanwhile the Qatar Tourism Authority will be renting a traditional Dhow to host VIPs and clients.

To round off the special week, there will be a closing ceremony at 9.30pm on Saturday 14th in which yachts throughout the harbour will sound their horns – much like the tradition of yachts sounding their horns upon completion of the Monaco Boat Show. But in view of their proximity to the QIBS event, this is likely to be louder and more impressive. Be there, and celebrate another successful edition of the Qatar International Boat Show!
